The cleaning products industry as a whole has taken significant steps in recent years to reduce its carbon footprint and become more environmentally friendly. One company really going the extra mile is Elevance Renewable Sciences, Inc. A high-growth specialty chemicals company, Elevance creates novel specialty chemicals from natural oils for use in personal care products, detergents and cleaners, lubricants and additives, engineered polymers and other specialty chemicals markets.
According to Andy Corr, SVP of Consumer Ingredients at Elevance, the company "has been focused on delivering products, building blocks and ingredients that outperform traditional bio-based products and petrochemicals." The company has achieved this primarily through their ground-breaking proprietary metathesis technology, producing products, ingredients and chemical building blocks that deliver category-changing performance with a smaller environmental footprint. This new category of products - branded Renewicals - is now helping the industry to move beyond petrochemicals and onto something better; a new generation of chemistry.
This technology and its manufacturing process have reaped benefits across the board, according to Corr: "Elevance's low-pressure, low-temperature process uses innovations in metathesis catalysis that consume significantly less energy and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 percent compared to petrochemical technologies. The manufacturing pathway enables a significant reduction of costs through scale, using relatively capex-light stills and reactors. The company's unique process has allowed it to scale up production easily at high yields and with commercially compelling economics," Corr explains, adding: "Elevance is the only specialty chemicals company that will have two world-scale biorefineries in operation by 2016."
How have Elevance been able to achieve this and get to this level? Partly through industry partnerships and leveraging new technologies. According to Corr, 'Elevance's model is to work with a broad range of partners to bring together complementary capabilities (assets, market expertise, distribution capabilities, R&D etc.) to develop products that meet customers' needs quickly, scale up cost effectively, reach markets rapidly and support customer application development.'
Collaboration with innovative industry leaders to commercialize the production of renewable chemicals has also brought Elevance broad success. What kind of company makes the ideal partner for Elevance? "Elevance's ideal partners share the vision and dedication to innovate within their industries, are willing to leverage resources, and are committed to the development and commercialisation of customised projects", explains Corr. Elevance has a public partnership in surfactants with Stepan Company, which is now introducing novel products globally, and a number of global distributors that support their personal care ingredients business for skin, hair care and cosmetics. The company continues to expand its collaborations and partnerships worldwide.
In a broader sense, how does Corr see Elevance's products fitting into the cleaning products industry? "Through our development and channel partners we are creating and offering new multi-functional ingredients that are bringing these unique performance characteristics to the cleaning industry today at scale. This enables the industry to have sustainable solutions that meet customer performance and environmental needs at a compelling cost and performance that was not possible before."
In this way, we can expect Elevance to continue growing over the next 5-10 years. "We see [Elevance] growing to a $1B+ company", divulges Corr. "We strive to be a leading ingredient business and innovator in these markets, with deep expertise in key application markets to meet our partners' and customers' needs through our unique building blocks and ingredients".
Andy Corr will be presenting at Cleaning Products Europe in March. Building on the success of previous events, this conference will continue to drive green innovations in the cleaning products industry by showcasing successful collaborations and bringing together representatives from throughout the supply chain.
Don't just take our word for it. In Corr's opinion, 'Cleaning Products Europe provides us with an opportunity to share more about the growing need for Renewicals in Europe. We hope to share more about Elevance, and how our proprietary metathesis technology can help create the bridge for the cleaning industry to meet many of the industry's sustainability goals and requirements without compromising on performance'. Finally, we hope to be able to share and introduce some of the first commercial products available to the cleaning market based on Elevance's proprietary metathesis technology."
